In an interview with Empire, Bruce Campbell (aka Ash Williams) talked about the latest developments around a new movie. Here’s what Campbell said:

“We’re just getting off the phone with Lee Cronin (Cronin), who is writing and directing the next Evil Dead,”

Campbell confirmed when asked about a possible Evil Dead IV (4). This is what Campbell said:

It’s called Evil Dead Now. Sam [Raimi] handpicked Lee [Cronin] – he did a cool movie called The Hole In The Ground. We’re going to get that sucker out as soon as practical.”

Just like Fede Alvarez’s 2013 Evil Dead, Evil Dead Now won’t feature Ash, and will, by the looks of things, centre on a female protagonist.

From this point forward, they kind of have to stand on their own. Which is fine. And liberating,” Campbell says. “You could have different heroes, different heroines in this case. This one’s going to be a little more dynamic.”

Campbell added: “We just want to keep the series current. And the mantra, really, is that our heroes and heroines are just regular people. That’s what we’re going to continue.

We want to stress, not only was his behaviour inappropriate, it’s criminal. Just for the record!

Back in May, we reported that horror producer Adam Donaghey (Donaghey) had been arrested after he was accused of sexually assaulting a teenage girl several years ago.

Yesterday, The Daily Beast published a detailed article on Donaghey and how a “right-wing movie studio” enabled his behaviour.

Written by Marlow Stern, The Daily Beast’s Senior Entertainment Editor, the article looks into further allegations and claims first brought to light in a Reddit thread regarding Donaghey’s initial arrest.

The biggest thing we took away from Stern’s article is that Donaghey appears to have displayed a pattern of inappropriate and sexual behaviour that many who have worked with him claim.

Most damming, a recording (listen below) by Cristen Leah Haynes (Haynes) who worked with Donaghey on the set of Occupy Texas in 2014.

Donaghey: “Come on, just for a second…Its not a big deal!
Haynes: “I feel like…it almost wouldn’t be that bad if you weren’t trying to trade for it.”
Donaghey: “I’m not trying to trade for it. I just want to see your underwear. That’s all!”
Haynes: “Yeah I’m not getting anything out of that. I wouldn’t want to do that.”
Donaghey: “You just said… hold on a sec! You just said something like, it wouldn’t be a big deal if you weren’t trying to trade, and then you’re saying, well, I’m not getting anything out of that.”
Haynes: “Well yeah, because it’s not what i want to do. Why would i do it if it’s not something I want to do?”
Donaghey: “What do you want to do? What do you want to get out of it”
Haynes: “Nothing! I don’t want to do it! It’s like saying, I’m going to shoot you in the foot. Well, what do I get out of it? Exactly, you don’t get anything out of it, but I get to shoot you in the foot.”
Donaghey: “Well, there’s plenty that you could get out of me.”
Haynes: “Oh, like what?”
Donaghey: “I’ll make you cum.”
Haynes: “No.”
Donaghey: “Even with just my fingers.”
Haynes: “No”
Donaghey: “With no reciprocation.”
Haynes: “That’s awful.”

The recording (brief transcript can be read below recording above) details unwanted sexual advances (insinuating a trade for future work), it was shared within the local film community and even on film sets Donaghey worked on.

In case you’re unaware, Donaghey was a frequent collaborator with Cinestate as well as being heavily involved with the Dallas film community.

Stay tuned to Horror Movie Zone as we continue to keep you up-to-date on how the story develops. Hopefully, it ends with a jail sentence.

Ever since Halloween Kills had its test screening in Los Angeles, California back in February, rumours have made the rounds about two potential character returns.

According to a Dark Universe source, Dr. Loomis will be one of the surprise returns in the movie’s 1978 flashback sequence with Michael Myers.

Should this be true, it’s going to be very interesting to see how they pull it off, bearing in mimd that the iconic Donald Pleasance is no longer alive.

In case you’re unaware, Pleasance played Dr. Loomis in John Carpenter’s Halloween

]]>
A recent online theory regarding the original Friday the 13th is that Mrs. Voorhees knew Jason (her son) wasn’t dead. Whilst this might clear up some plot holes in the iconic horror franchise, more questions still need to be answered.

Sean S. Cunningham’s (Cunningham) influential slasher movie was a massive box office success for Paramount. Bought following a bidding war with several other studios, Paramount launched an expensive ad marketing campaign.

“The slasher template borrowed from Halloween (1978) and featured ingenious and gruesome practical effects by Tom Savini (Savini), hit a nerve with the thrill-seeking public.”

Bradley Harding, Screen Rant

By the end of it’s incredible box office run, it was Paramount’s second most profitable movie in 1980. A sequel was requested quickly by the studio, however given the high death rate in the movie, following it up would not be so simple.

For those that don’t know…

The storyline of Friday the 13th revolved around the reopening of Camp Crystal Lake, a summer camp which was closed following the murders of two camp counselors in 1958. As the owner, including the new counselors, prepare the camp grounds for the summer, they are murdered methodically.

It was revealed (towards the final scene of the movie) that former camp cook, Mrs. Voorhees (played by Betsy Palmer) was responsible for the murders in 1958 as well as the bodies spread around the lake.

Voorhees confession to the movie’s final girl Alice (played by Adrienne King) revealed that her killing spree was started by the death of her young son, Jason, who drowned in the lake after two counsellors left him unattended. Following a struggle with Voorhees, Alice ends up decapitating her, swiftly ending Voorhees reign of terror on the camp.

So the question is, did Mrs. Voorhees know Jason was alive?

In an unscripted addition, credit to Cunningham and Savini, Alice boards a canoe and falls asleep. She dreams that Jason, in child form, rises from the lake to attack her – dragging her underwater. Even at the time the movie was release, fans believed that the dream sequence really happened.

“Overlooking the fact” that Jason died 13 years before and wouldn’t have been a child, the whole premise for the movie would have been totally contradicted if the ending had been real. Fuel was added to this rumour when the sequel was released a year later, which ran with the premise that Jason did not die in order for him to “take the mantle of killer” from his dead mother.

The recent online theory suggests Mrs. Voorhees knew that Jason was alive all along “posits” that Jason nearly drowned at the lake, but she found his near-lifeless body. Mrs. Voorhees hid hint way in the woods and vowed to never let the camp to reopen again.

The lack of oxygen caused Jason to suffer severe brain damage, affecting his speech. This would explain why Mrs. Voorhees spoke for him throughout the original movie.  Whilst this theory is a massive stretch, it just goes to show the creative lengths that fans will reach to make sense of using Jason as the killer in the sequel.

It would be fair to suggest that A Nightmare on Elm Street is one of the most important and much-loved horror franchises of all time, but despite of its impact, director Wes Craven (Craven) held some reservations/regrets regarding the ending of the movie. According to Screen Rant’s Daniel Kurland, here’s why Craven regrets the ending of the iconic horror movie.

One of the best things about A Nightmare on Elm Street that’s distinctive to these movies is how they make the audience unsure if what they’re seeing on the screen is a dream or reality. This particular tension is played throughout the entirety of the movie, however this tension is present especially during the ending of the movie. Watch below:

What you saw in the video above is a powerful ending to say the least, however Craven wanted to play it much more toned down. Nancy and her friends would have gotten away safely and the audience watching would be left to wonder if Nancy escaped the threat of Freddy Krueger (Freddy) or if it was all just a big nightmare to start with.

Bob Shaye (Shaye), the founder of New Line Cinema and the movie’s producer was unhappy with this old fashioned ending and insisted that there should be some kind of twist that follows. Shaye’s suggestion was that he wanted Freddy to be the one who’s driving the car at the end and presumably taking Nancy and her friends into deeper horrors.

Craven hated the idea of Freddy in the driver’s seat and so he and Shaye went back and forth on a handful of different ideas. What you see in the theatrical version is the compromise that Craven and Shaye reached that still retains much of Craven’s vision without pushing things “too far into the absurd”.

In an “oral history” (e.g. interviews) of the movie, Craven stated that he still prefers the philosophical symbolism of his original ending and while the finished version isn’t perfect in his option, it’s still considerably better than Shaye’s initial suggestion. It’s an ending that still has an impact and manipulate the audience’s expectations. It’s also an ending which would go on to become a staple of endings in the franchise’s movies.
